Common sandpiper. Greek: ακτίτης. Gadouras River, April 2002.
Passage migrant, uncommon. Length 18-20 cm, wingspan 32-35 cm. Sexes similar. River banks, beeches near river mouths, reservoirs. Forages by sight on ground and in shallow water. Characteristic foraging walk with bobbing head and pumping tail. Feeds on insects, crustaceans, molluscs, small fish. Characteristic flight low over water with shallow wing beats and glides.
