Garganey (male). Greek: σαρσέλα (αρσενική). Pera River, Afandou, April 2022.
Passage migrant, uncommon. Length 40-43 cm, wingspan 58-70 cm. Male streaked brown with grey flanks and broad white crescent over eye, female mottled brown overall with less bold eyebrow. Coastal areas with fresh or brackish shallow water. Forages, often at night, by dabbling and skimming, takes crustaceans, molluscs, insects, aquatic weeds. Rises with ease from water with fast twisting flight.
