Passage migrant, uncommon. Length 33-42 cm, wingspan 76-91 cm. Sexes similar. Inland fresh-water areas close to seashore. Catches insects in flight. Forages on ground, seeks prey by walking, takes lizards, small rodents, chicks of waterbirds. Seldom preys on fish. Flies with shallow wing beats.
