Himantopus himantopus
Black-winged stilt (male). Greek: καλαμoκαvάς (αρσενικός). Gadouras river-mouth lagoon, August 2002.
Passage migrant, uncommon. Length 35-40 cm, wingspan 70-75 cm. Sexes similar, greenish black wings in males as opposed to dark brown in females. River mouths, riverbed pools, ponds, reservoirs. Feeds in shallow water, takes aquatic insects, worms, tadpoles, molluscs. Quick wader with long strides. Gregarious behaviour.
