Tringa ochropus
Green sandpiper. Greek: δασότρυγγας. Gadouras river-mouth lagoon, April 2002.
Passage migrant, uncommon. Length 21-24 cm, wingspan 41-46 cm. Sexes similar. River mouths, riverbed pools, ponds, reservoirs. Feeds in shallow water, on damp ground, takes insects, larvae, crustaceans, small fish. Characteristic foraging walk with bobbing head and pumping tail. Wary, solitary behaviour in migration. Takes off in zigzag flight and soars when disturbed.
