Passage migrant, rare at coastal lagoons. Length 41-45 cm, wingspan 75-80 cm. Sexes similar. Forages in shallow brackish water often by sweeping bill from side to side, feeds on molluscs, crustaceans, insects, small fish. Flies with fast, steady wing beats and outstretched neck. Loud, fluid calls.
