Passage migrant, large flocks in some years. Length 15-17 cm, wingspan 23-26 cm. Male with chestnut crown and heavily streaked chest, female very similar to female house sparrow. Feeds primarily on seeds, also takes insects. Calls and song similar to those of house sparrow.
