House sparrow (male). Greek: σπιτοσπoυργίτης (αρσενικός). Pefki, April 2022.
Resident, common. Length 15-18 cm, wingspan 23-25 cm. Male with bold face markings, grey crown and reddish brown back, female grey-brown overall. Towns, villages, farmland. Opportunistic feeder, but seeds, insects are main diet. Monogamous, life pair bond, nests under eaves, in tree holes, cliff crevices. Gregarious behaviour. Bathes frequently in dust, water. Direct flight, hops on ground, can swim to escape danger. Chirping call and song.
