Black-headed bunting (male). Greek: αμπελoυργός (αρσενικός). Apolakia, May 2003.
Breeding migrant from Asia. Mid-April to September. Primarily in south-western areas, but very drastic decline in number of pairs over past two decades. Length 16-18 cm, wingspan 25-30 cm. Breeding male with black head, chestnut back and bright yellow neck and underparts; female in breeding plumage resembles male with much paler colouring. Open scrubby areas, often close to farmland. Builds nest in low bushes. Feeds mainly on seeds. Sings diligently from bush tops, power lines and on the wing. Short, bold song with abrupt ending. Territorial male behaviour with frequent patrolling flights often accompanied by song.
