Uncommon resident/breeding migrant. Drastic decrease in number of pairs over last two decades, currently single-digit total, absent in most areas. Length 50-65 cm, wingspan 125-150 cm, female larger than male. Open dry rocky areas. Nests on steep cliff walls. Heavy eagle-like flight, glides, hangs motionless in air upon detecting prey. Takes prey on ground. Feeds on lizards, snakes, small rodents, also insects, birds and carrion.
