Wide distribution, but infrequent occurrence and in small numbers, often singles. Wingspan 45-50 mm. In females, wide black borders on upper side of wings have spots showing crocus-yellow ground colour. White form (helice) among females. Flies all year in two or three generations. Diverse open habitats, including parks and gardens. Wings always closed when at rest or feeding. Fast flight, often in straight line. Roaming behaviour. Strong migration tendency.
