Uncommon. Wingspan 70-80 mm. Sexes similar, male with large black spot with white centre on underside of hindwing. Flies June to January. Diverse habitats in coastal areas, often in reed beds. Feeds on nectar, acquires toxic substances from milkweed, which make it unpalatable to potential predators. Bright colouration warns predators, is mimicked by other butterfly species. Pronounced migratory tendency and ability. Rhodes population a mixture of natives and migrants. Known to humans for at least 3,500 years, as witnessed by first known depiction of a butterfly in Luxor.
