RODOPTERA
Hipparchia fatua
Freyer's grayling. Aghios Isidoros, July 2020.
Common and widespread. Wingspan 55-60 mm. Sexes similar, upper side of forewings lighter brown in females. Flies April to October in one generation. Rocky slopes, forests, shrubland. Takes salts from damp ground, juice from rotten fruit, rarely nectar. Very seldom opens wings when settled. Warms up on rocks and walls in early hours, often tilts body for more effective basking. July-August aestivation on tree trunks and branches with bark-like mottled pattern of hind wings underside providing excellent camouflage; keeps wings jack-knifed, but flashes up forewings with big ‘eyes’ at any sign of danger. Powerful flight two-three metres above ground.
