Uncommon, distribution largely restricted to one western area. Wingspan 45-55 mm. Prominent sexual dimorphism: white ground colour of forewings and broad white band on hind wings in males, light orange ground colour of forewings and mottled brown hind wings in females; males distinctively smaller than females. Flies May to October with aestivation in August. Rocky slopes at 1000-1200 m. Takes nectar mostly from thistles. Rests on ground frequently. Rarely opens wings when settled. Flies two-three metres above ground.
