Uncommon but widespread, good numbers in some areas. Only species of African genus Charaxes in Europe with distribution largely limited to coastal areas and large islands in Mediterranean region. Special protection by law in Greece. Wingspan 75-90 mm (female significantly larger than male). Sexes similar. Flies March to October in two generations. Hillside forests, shrubland with host plant strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo). Strongly attracted to overripe fruit (split fruit on fig trees a special treat); also visits excrements and carrion. Powerful flier, darts around trees. Territorial male behaviour, aggressive stance toward intruders (including photographers). Sedentary, but occasionally wanders far from habitat.
