Uncommon but widely distributed. Wingspan 55-60 mm. Sexes similar. Flies all year in two generations. Intermittent hibernation. Diverse habitats including parks and gardens. Feeds primarily on nectar, but also visits overripe fruit and excrements, takes tree sap and imbibes salts from damp ground. Highly territorial male behaviour. Powerful flight. Pronounced migration tendency. Island population probably a mixture of residents and migrants.
