Birds and Butterflies of Rhodes
RODOPTERA
Vanessa cardui
Painted lady. Rhodes town, June 2019.
Common and widespread. Wingspan 50-60 mm. Sexes similar. Flies all year in at least two generations. Diverse mostly open habitats with flowers, including parks and gardens. Long-distance migrant between sub-Saharan Africa and northern Europe. Solid evidence suggests annual round-trip migration in successive generations covers 12,000 km. On Rhodes, very numerous fresh summer brood in small area can disappear completely within few days. Island population most likely a mixture of migrants and residents.
