Uncommon, sparsely distributed in western areas in particular, usually occurs in small numbers, often singles. Wingspan 40-50 mm. Sexes similar; usually female has two large 'eyes' on forewings, males only one. Characteristic deeply serrated margin of hind wings in both sexes. Flies April to October in one generation. Aestivates late July to early September. Idle farmland close to trees, roadsides, forests, rocky slopes at moderate altitudes. Seldom opens wings when settled.
