Common and widespread, frequent occurrence in singles or twos, but often in mid-summer very numerous on idle farmland with heliotrope or on roadside thistles. Wingspan 25-30 mm. Sexes similar. Flies all year in at least three generations. Diverse open habitats with flowers, including parks and gardens. Very active on sunny days with short spells of basking mostly with half-open wings. Territorial male behaviour, darts and chases any intruder while waiting on flower perches for passing females, frenzied aerial battles with males of same species.
