Resident, common. Length 54-67 cm, wingspan 115-150 cm. Sexes similar. Various habitats near high hills, mountains. Shy and vigilant. Problem-solving ability indicates high intelligence. Omnivorous and opportunistic feeder, takes carrion, eggs and young of birds, rodents, seeds and fruit, food waste. Life-long pair bond. Nests in large trees, on cliff ledges. Defends large territory, chases raptors relentlessly at all times. Far-carrying deep croak among many distinctive resonant calls.
