Resident, common and widespread. Length 32-36 cm, wingspan 54-58 cm. Rhodes subspecies 'atricapillus' with white face and black crown. Sexes similar. Diverse wooded areas, scrubland with tree stands, olive groves, farmland. Feeds on insects, worms, berries, chestnuts, acorns, occasionally bird eggs, nestlings. Nests in trees, large shrubs. Aggressive territorial behaviour when breeding, males engage in fierce fights. Secretive, alert behaviour. Avoids leaving foliage cover, flies mostly low among trees.
